Assessing the Continuous Professional Development Needs Among Healthcare Providers in Bhutan, Faculty members, and administrative Staff of KGUMSB |

| Background |
Continuous Professional Development enables the healthcare workforce to adapt to emerging health challenges and respond effectively to patients’ needs within an evolving practice environment.
CPD is also equally important for academic institutions, as faculty members require ongoing professional development to strengthen their teaching methodologies, research capacity, curriculum development, and assessment methods. Similarly, administrative staff play a significant role in institutional governance, planning, and human resource management, which requires up-to-date knowledge and competencies to ensure efficient and effective execution of their respective roles and responsibilities
The existing CPD initiatives may not substantially reflect the actual and evolving needs of different professional groups, potentially leading to misalignment between training opportunities and knowledge, competency, or skills requirements. This gap negatively impacts the effectiveness of CPD in strengthening clinical practice, academic performance, and administrative efficiency. Without a structured needs assessment, CPD programs risk being misaligned and less effective in addressing priority areas for professional growth and institutional development.
Therefore, this study aims to assess the Continuous Professional Development needs of healthcare providers, faculty members, and administrative staff. It will identify current CPD participation status, prioritize learning needs, and determine competency gaps. The findings will provide evidence to inform the development of targeted and relevant CPD activities aligned with national priorities, institutional goals, and healthcare delivery priorities. |

Expected Outcomes of the Study
1.Comprehensive mapping of CPD needs
The study will generate a detailed profile of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs among healthcare providers, faculty members, and administrative staff at Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan.
2.Identification of variation across different cadres
Differences in CPD priorities across different cadres (healthcare providers, faculty, and administrative staff) will be clearly specified, including how factors such as role, specialization, and years of experience influence these needs.
3.Preferred CPD delivery methods
The study will identify the most preferred and effective CPD delivery approaches (e.g., workshops, online learning, blended formats) tailored to each professional group.
4.Barriers to CPD participation
Key institutional, professional, and personal barriers (such as workload, time constraints, access to resources, and organizational support) will be systematically identified for each cadre.
5.Evidence-based recommendations
The study will generate constructive recommendations for designing ,planning and implementing need based CPD programs aligned with the priorities and requirement for different professional groups.
Use of Results
1.Inform CPD program planning and policy
Findings will support KGUMSB and relevant stakeholders in developing need based CPD programs that are aligned with workforce requirements and institutional goals.
2.Enhance the quality and relevance of training
The results will guide the design of targeted CPD interventions, ensuring the content and delivery methods are relevant and practical to the needs of each cadre of professionals
3.Improve participation in CPD activites
Through enhancement of preferred learning methods, the study will help improve sustained engagement in CPD activities.
4.Support resource allocation and decision-making
Evidence from the study will assist institutional leaders in prioritizing resources, and strengthening capacity-building strategies. |
