| Background |
Yama Gosin is among the top four most common diseases recorded in TM facilities, with more than 7000 case visits reported nationally in 2024. Its symptoms include chronic nasal obstruction, frontal head pain, anosmia, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Yama Gosin is classified into three types: Yama Kar, Nak and Thra. Chronic Yama Gosin is believed to arise from an imbalance of the Nyepa (three humors), with symptoms further aggravated by consumption of diets and drinks unsuitable to the patient’s constitution. Traditional Medicine (TM) Units across Bhutan provide preventive and therapeutic services for this condition following national treatment and therapy guidelines. |
| Objectives |
This study aims to describe the clinical profile, social burden, and quality of life among patients diagnosed with chronic Yama Gosin in four selected hospitals in Bhutan. |
| Study Methods |
This study is a cross-sectional design, with patients visiting four Traditional Medicine Hospitals. A systematic random sampling will be used to select the participants. The data will be collected using REDCap, hosted at Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) in Thimphu. Ethical approval will be sought from the Research Ethics Board of Health, Ministry of Health, Royal Government of Bhutan. In addition, administrative approval will be sought from the Ministry of Health and the participant hospital administrations. |
| Expected outcomes and use of results |
The social burden and the quality of life among the chronic yama gosin patients will be presented at national and international conferences and submitted for publication in a peer reviewed journal. The result can be used to formulate an informed treatment protocol for the patients with chronic yama gosin at Traditional Medicine Hospitals across the country. |
