Title(s) and abstract

Scientific title Assessment of Knowledge and Attitude towards Sexual and Gender Diversity among college students in Bhutan: a cross-sectional study
Public title Assessment of Knowledge and Attitude towards Sexual and Gender Diversity among college students in Bhutan: a cross-sectional study

Background Sexual and gender minorities, under the umbrella term LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender), constitute a vulnerable group within society. They are frequently subjected to stigma and discrimination, which can lead to higher rates of mental health problems, reduced health-seeking behaviour, and increased risk of physical health conditions such as sexually transmitted infections. Adequate knowledge and understanding of sexual and gender diversity is therefore essential in fostering positive attitudes, and reducing stigma, which can mitigate such consequences. Therefore, this study aims to assess the knowledge and attitudes related to sexual and gender diversity among college students in selected colleges of Bhutan
Objectives Among college students of selected colleges in Bhutan in 2026, to describe the: 1. Level of Knowledge and understanding about Sexual and Gender Diversity 2. Attitude towards Sexual and Gender diverse population 3. Factors associated with good level of knowledge on Sexual and Gender Diversity 4. Willingness to support Sexual and Gender diverse population.
Study Methods The investigators will visit the selected study sites and obtain the list of program cohorts from the office of Dean. All cohorts will be arranged in series and given a serial number. A random sequence generator will be used to create a random sequence of the list of program cohorts. The study team will visit the students before or after their regular class/academic session and distribute the online survey response link (REDCap) through the class monitor. All students who are available at the college campus on the day of interview will be selected. Following this, the students in the next program cohort/class will be included in the study until the sample size is achieved. With the inclusion of the last cohort, even if it exceeds the sample size for the college, all students will be included.
Expected outcomes and use of results The result will describe the level of knowledge and attitude of college students towards sexual and gender diversity. This study will also identify the factors associated with level of knowledge which can be applied in clinical practices to combat mental health conditions resulting from consequences related to Sexual and Gender Identities.
