Title(s) and abstract

Scientific title Proportion of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in patients with genitourinary syndrome tested at selected hospitals in Bhutan: a cross-sectional study
Public title Gonorrhoea in selected hospitals

Background The global incident cases of gonorrhoea has increased over the last decades. The availability of diagnostic tests remains a major challenge across many countries in the background of rising antimicrobial resistance of Neiserria gonorrheae. In Bhutan, there is high proportion of positivity for N gonorrheae among those tested with urethral smear or high-vaginal swabs and antibiotic resistance may not be a major concern. However, there is a lack to reliable and representative data from the districts.
Objectives This study is aimed at describing the profile of patients with urethral discharge syndromes evaluated for N gonorrheae through urethral smear or high-vaginal swab tests.
Study Methods This will be a cross-sectional study with retrospective review of laboratory data of clients tested with urethral smear or high vaginal swab for N gonorrhoeae at ten selected hospitals across the country. All clients tested for urethral smear between 01 January 2024 and 31 December 2025. Wherever hospitals records are available, data collection will include data from previous years. Data will be collected using REDCap, hosted at the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, Thimphu. Data will be exported and analysis will be performed using STATA (version 13.1, StataCorp LP USA). Continuous variables will be summarized using means, standard deviations, median and interquartile range. Categorical variables will be summarized using frequencies, proportions and percentages.
Expected outcomes and use of results This study will generate the proportion of test positivity among those tested. Wherever bacterial culture has been done, antibiotic susceptibility pattern will be presented. This study provide the baseline data on gonococcal urethritis across districts and antibiotic susceptibility pattern from three sites.
