Title(s) and abstract

Scientific title Assessment of Medication Adherence among patients availing Traditional Medicine services in selected hospitals: a cross-sectional study
Public title Traditional Medicine Adherence Study

Background Medication adherence remains a global challenge across both developed and developing nations. Poor medication adherence contributes significantly to the burden on both healthcare providers and patients. While several studies have examined medication adherence in the context of allopathic medicine, there is a notable lack of research assessing adherence to Traditional Medicine in Bhutan.
Objectives This study aims to describe medication adherence among adult patients prescribed Traditional Medicine drugs within selected hospitals and primary healthcare centres during five months, from June 1 to October 1, 2025.
Study Methods This will be a cross-sectional study, and systematic random sampling will be used to select participants based on registration token every day, and data will be collected from every second patient. The sample size was calculated for proportions. The lottery method will be used to select the first participant from the first two registered patients. Each participant will be given a questionnaire to be answered, consisting of demographic details and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) to measure the level of medication adherence to Traditional Medicine in Bhutan.
Expected outcomes and use of results The findings will highlight specific areas where adherence support and patient education efforts should be focused on improving overall treatment outcomes. The findings will provide valuable insights into the specific challenges and contribute to a better understanding of Traditional Medicine adherence in this population, enabling the future development of interventions to improve adherence, enhance treatment effectiveness, and promote informed decision-making regarding Traditional Medicine use.
