Title(s) and abstract

Scientific title Metabolic Risk factors of Non-Communicable Diseases among the elderlies in Thimphu City, Bhutan.
Public title Metabolic Risk factors of Non-Communicable Diseases among the elderlies in Thimphu City, Bhutan.

Background In Bhutan 69 % of the deaths are from NCD with the probability of premature mortality from NCD estimated at 23 %. The prevalence of overweight or obesity, hypertension and diabetes based on Bhutan’s nationwide STEPS survey was 32.9%, 35.7% and 6.4% respectively . But the study did not specifically study the prevalence in relation to the elderlies in the city setting. This is important because approximately 38% of the population in Bhutan are urban dwellers. Bhutan is also seeing accelerated demographic transition with reducing fertility rates and increasing ageing population. The country as a whole and the Thromdes in particular needs to prepare for a city with an increasing ageing population with various health needs. Therefore, investigating the magnitude of NCD risk factors will help develop prevention strategies and interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality from NCDs and promote healthy ageing population. The study aims to estimate the prevalence of metabolic risk factors for NCDs among the elderlies in the capital city of Bhutan. The findings from this study could be helpful to formulate NCDs prevention and control strategies as well as elderly health strategies and policies in Bhutan.
Objectives Among the elderly participants of the health screening program in the capital city Thimphu (carried out in 2021): 1. To describe the proportion with high blood pressure. 2. To describe the proportion with elevated blood sugar levels. 3. To describe their body mass index (BMI) status. 4. To assess the proportion of tobacco use.
Study Methods This is a retrospective study involving the secondary analysis of routine administrative data collected for the elderly health program by the health sector, Thimphu Thromde in 2021.
Expected outcomes and use of results The result from this study will give the baseline data for the prevalence of metabolic risks factors for the elderly population residing in Bhutan. This will be useful for the purpose of program planning (at the Ministry of Health, Bhutan) and in devising specific health interventions to help the elderlies in the country.
