Scientific title Cardiovascular effects of poisoning following ingestion of dried rhododendron flower in a middle-aged woman: a case report
Public title Cardiovascular effects of poisoning following ingestion of dried rhododendron flower in a middle-aged woman: a case report

Background Rhododendron toxicity can be life-threatening or fatal when manifested with cardiovascular and neurological adverse effects. A 56-year-old woman presented nausea, anorexia, dizziness, tingling sensation in her face and limbs, chest tightness, and shortness of breath after ingestion of dried flowers of rhododendron. On examination, she had sinus bradycardia and hypotension. She was managed with low nasal flow oxygen, crystalloids, noradrenaline infusions, and atropine. She was admitted for monitoring and observation. She had normalization of vital parameters and was discharged after 24 hours. These symptoms were most likely due to grayanotoxin found in the rhododendron family. This case highlights the need to raise awareness among the public on the potential of plant poisoning due to rhododendrons and to seek timely medical care in case of symptoms. Clinicians are recommended to take context-specific history to identify potential aetiologies of poisoning.
Objectives To disseminate the unprecedented case information among the clinician and to the reader To publish in one of the national health journal
